There is a collection of unusually shaped printed matter on my bookshelf. Tiny leaflets, fold-out books, really long flyers, giant kids’ books. I collect them from second-hand markets, museums, and keepsakes from online orders. I keep them as inspiration if I have time for a project one day then I can borrow ideas from these unusual shapes! But to be honest it’s not that, I just like collecting beautiful objects.
Last year I took part in the Bergen Art Book Fair buffet, next to the Art Book Fair they organised a shop with local artist’s publications. An eclectic collection of all sorts of things. And for that occasion, I made a really long fold-out zine!
I made only 10 of them and just found two in my drawer after moving working spaces, and it instantly made me want to make more tiny paper objects!
I painted a series of blue gouache girls earlier this year and they were just perfect for the long format I wanted. I tested my A3 printer's ability to print on a long roll of paper way over the 42cm and used a thick watercolour paper to print on. And a folding tool to make the folds nice and neat.
The result is this tiny zine, featuring 9 girls, it’s an A8 size when folded, so 74mm tall and 468mm long. It can be a zine or displayed on a shelf as a quirky card.
Since that first experiment, I have done so many fold-out objects, including business cards and flyers for the Bergen Drawing Club.
